TO BE, BELIEVE, BELONG, & BECOME

Missions/Outreach

Ministries and Outreach Opportunities

United Methodist Communications continues to provide news coverage of the situation in Haiti, including how the church is responding, at http://www.umc.org/haiti.  We also want you to know of other resources available for churches and members who want to help.

Volunteers and Health Kits
According to UMCOR (http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=ovLYL8MRLmK3LnI&s=apIPI1MyHiJQLQNwErH&m=iiJSK9PPLjIZF) (United Methodist Committee on Relief), there will be a great need for volunteers to help rebuild once the initial crisis is past, but it is not safe or possible for volunteers to go to Haiti at the present. However, UMCOR's two relief supply warehouses are asking United Methodists to provide health kits that will be sent to Haiti. Instructions for assembling and shipping health kits are available here (http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=krKQJWOCIaLMIbI&s=apIPI1MyHiJQLQNwErH&m=iiJSK9PPLjIZF).

Donations
We are grateful that donations continue to come in online (http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=jgLOITNyHaINKaJ&s=apIPI1MyHiJQLQNwErH&m=iiJSK9PPLjIZF).Donors may also contribute by placing a check in the offering plate at a local church or by mailing it to UMCOR, P.O. Box 9068, New York, NY 10087. Checks should indicate "Advance #418325" in the memo line.  United Methodist Communications is creating a special bulletin insert for churches' use, which will be available Friday at www.umc.org/haiti.

Ministry Resources
Following the Asian tsunami, United Methodist Communications produced a video and study guide titled "God, Why?" to help people cope with the spiritual and emotional impact of disasters. The resource, available from EcuFilm (http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=khKQJWOCIeLMI7I&s=apIPI1MyHiJQLQNwErH&m=iiJSK9PPLjIZF), explores why such tragedies happen and God's role in them.  The study guide provides a basis for group study and discussion.

During this time of pain and suffering, let us take comfort in the promise of Psalm 46:1, NRSV:
"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."

As you know, there was a terrible earthquake in Haiti on Tuesday (1/12/10).  Rescue and relief agencies understand that people want to get involved and help but at this time the most effective way our Church family can be of assistance is financially.  After speaking with a few members of the Mission Team, we concur that this is our best intervention at this moment.  Should you feel called to help Haiti at this time we are recommending to make donations to the following two organizations:

UMCOR (the United Methodist Committee on Relief) – there is already an Advance Special set up for Haiti (#418325) - 100% of gifts to UMCOR through the Advance support the designated project, their website is www.umcor.org

 S.A.L.T. (Sudan Action Leadership Team)
The Sudan Action Leadership Team is pursuing three objectives:  1) supporting Sudan's Lost Boys and Girls in the Virginia area in efforts to complete their educations, 2) building awareness of the United States of the needs of the communities in Southern Sudan, and 3) building a facility in Rumbek, Southern Sudan to support the educational, social, cultural and worship needs of that community. Contact Amy Lofgren, Missions Chair, at cwumc@earthlink.net for more information about the this important mission and how you can help.

SHARE
The economic crisis has seriously impacted many people in our neighborhood.  A number of our neighbors need food and supplies.  SHARE is seeking donations and distributing them to local people in need.

For forty years, SHARE has provided services to local families and individuals who are experiencing hardships.  SHARE is comprised of volunteers from local faith and civic organizations and provides support to McLean, Great Falls, and nearby areas.  SHARE is a non-profit (501c(3)) organization.  It provides the following services:

Food and clothing through its distribution center at the McLean Bible Church, open Wednesday and Saturday mornings (between 10:00am and 12:00pm) to receive and disburse food and clothing; Good used furniture collected from donors and delivered to homes; Transportation to hospitals, clinics, and doctors' offices; Family assistance to supplement local government support.  Cash donations to SHARE are often used to provide assistance.

The following statistics exemplify how SHARE is helping our neighbors: In January, SHARE distributed 653 bags of food and 201 bags of clothing.  The February numbers were about the same.  SHARE provides services to approximately 500 families in the McLean area.  SHARE helps about 32 families per day (Wednesday and Saturday).

Since November, the number of families served increased by eight families per month.  Unfortunately, SHARE's supplies often run out and it is forced to turn people away.

SHARE needs our help now more than ever.  Charles Wesley United Methodist Church is a local collection point where donations can be dropped off in our church lobby.  Dale Thompson is our church's SHARE representative.  To obtain more information, visit www.ShareofMcLean.org or call 703-284-2179.
